Ausnahmen können bestimmte Streckenabschnitte wie Tunnel oder Brücken darstellen (ein bekanntes Beispiel in Skandinavien ist zum Beispiel die Öresundbrücke). In den meisten Ländern Südeuropas hingegen ist eine streckenabhängige Maut zu entrichten. Oft gibt es dort jedoch, wie zum Beispiel in Spanien, auch mautfreie Autobahnen oder Schnellstraßen. In den meisten Ländern Mittel- und Südosteuropas muss eine Vignette gekauft werden um Autobahnen nutzen zu dürfen. Prominentes Beispiel ist hier Österreich.

Exceptions may be certain sections like tunnels or bridges (a well known example in Scandinavia is, for example, the Öresund Bridge). In most countries of southern Europe, however, a distance-based toll is payable. Often there are, however, such as in Spain, toll-free highways or expressways too. In most countries of Central and Southeast Europe a vignette needs to be purchased to be allowed to utilize the highways. A prominent example is Austria.
